How To Make Mint Julep Brownies: A Kentucky Derby Special
For Kentuckian’s, there are only a few things that take precedence over all else. The single biggest event that happens every year on the first Saturday in May, is the Kentucky Derby. While people from all over the US and world gather in Louisville, Kentucky, some of the less fortunate ones are stuck at home, watching the coverage on their television because they couldn’t afford the Kentucky Derby ticket price or they just didn’t want to fight the crowds that gather there in the Grandstands and the infield of Churchill Downs. But for the ones that choose to stay behind in the comfort of their own homes and have a Derby party, here is a recipe you will surely want to use to entertain all your guests and offer a “taste” of what the Derby has to offer.
The Mint Julep is the choice drink of patrons at the Kentucky Derby, but trying to find that perfect Kentucky Derby Mint Julep recipe is often a difficult task, if you are wanting it to taste like the one you can get at the Derby itself. So instead, when hosting your Derby party, offer something that has the taste of the Mint Julep but is more enjoyable. The Mint Julep brownies are a must for all Derby fans and it is a simple recipe to follow. Here is what you will need:
Adapted from My Own Sweet Thyme
- 1 cup butter
- 4 ounces dark chocolate, broken into pieces
- 4 eggs
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 2 Tablespoons bourbon
In a medium saucepan, warm butter and chocolate over low heat until melted and smooth. Remove from heat to cool slightly. In a large bowl beat eggs on medium speed for 2 minutes. Add the cooled chocolate mixture, sugar, flour, salt, peppermint extract and bourbon and stir until fully incorporated.
Pour batter into a greased 9 x 13 pan (I just line my pan with parchment paper). Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool completely before cutting.
For an authentic Mint Julep presentation, splash each serving plate with some bourbon and place a brownie slice right on top. Garnish each slice with freshly whipped cream and a sprig of mint and watch this dish become more memorable than who won the Derby.
