How To Make The Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich

We all have had a grilled cheese at one point or another in our life.  When I was growing up, nothing made me happier than going over to my grandmother’s house and having her fix me a grilled cheese sandwich.  To this day, I still have no idea how she made her’s taste so good.  This sandwich is such a simple recipe, bread, butter, cheese, and a skillet.  But have you ever thought about what would make a simple thing so much better?

20100428-grilledcheese-500To get us started on creating the “ultimate grilled cheese” we need to start with the bread.  Most simply use a plain sliced sandwich bread, but take it to the next level with a loaf of sourdough or rustic italian.  Next, and more importantly, change it up and use more than one cheese.  There isn’t a best cheese for grilled cheese, it’s all about what you like.

Throw a few different types of cheese to give it added flavor.  I prefer a 3 cheese grilled cheese with a mild cheddar, swiss, and colby jack cheese, but you can throw whatever you want on there.

Now that you have the main ingredients together, let them sit out and get to warm temperature before grilling.  This will allow the cheese to melt more evenly on the bread.  And make sure you put enough cheese on the bread to give you plenty of flavor.  Nobody wants to have a little bit of cheese with their bread.  You can also throw in a little thyme, basil, or rosemary if you are feeling it.

The next step is very important in making the perfect grilled cheese.  Instead of buttering the bread and putting it on your skillet, simply butter the skillet and then place your bread on top of it.  Reason being, it saves your bread from looking like an off-road course and it won’t over-saturate your bread.  The perfect temperature for grilled cheese sandwiches is about 350 degrees Fahrenheit or for those that don’t have stoves you can adjust to a temperature, medium heat will do.  Once you have that going, put your first slice on the butter along with the cheese and cover with a metal bowl or skillet to help melt the cheese.  Once you have let it cook for about 2 minutes, toss on your top slice and flip the sandwich over.  Let it cook for about 2 more minutes, and in less than 5 minutes, you have a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich that should be offered in a 5 star restaurant.
